Female genital mutilation is increasing in Western countries
The practice of female genital mutilation has expanded in recent years in Western countries because of increased migration, lamented Friday Director General of International Organization for Migration (IOM).
"With the increased migration in recent years the phenomenon has unfortunately happened in Europe, the United States" as well as Australia and New Zealand, told reporters William Lacy Swing, on the occasion of the 8th International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (6 February). Some 500,000
circumcised women live in Europe, Mr. Swing said, citing figures from the European Parliament.
According to the IOM, female genital mutilation (FGM) affects between 100 and 140 million girls and women worldwide.
